  • The History of Major League Baseball

Major League baseball is held in United States and Canada. It is the most prestigious baseball tournament in United States and Canada. The history of major league baseball is very ancient and glorious. Many said that the formation of National League in 1876 was the initiating of Major League baseball. Many others said that the true starting of Major League Baseball was the signing of the National Agreement in 1903.Now there are two major leagues, the National League and the American League.

The National Association of Base Ball Players, known as NABBP was formed in 1860.Then “New York“style baseball was established as a national game. By 1867, more than 400 clubs were members, although most of the best and strongest clubs remained those based in the northeastern part of the country. In 1876, the National league of Professional Base Ball Clubs was established, after the National Association proved ineffective. The early years of the National League became noisy with threats from rival leagues and a disputation by players against the hated “reserve clause”, which restricted the free movement of players between clubs. For that many other leagues were formed. But those were not successful to compete. Most of those leagues disbanded regularly. The most successful was the American Association for its tolerance of the sale of alcoholic beverages to spectators. After few years, the National League and American Association champions arranged a postseason championship series—the first attempt at a World Series.

The National League was one of the major leagues because it was rapidly spread out in the major cities, especially New York City. The large cities wanted to win the league to increase their reputation. They offered baseball teams national media distribution systems. They made teams enable to hire the best players in the country. But it also created problems. The bidding war for players led to widespread contract-breaking and legal disputes. Many players went to another city and faced tremendous obstacles.

There was also war among major leagues of baseball. The war between the American and National leagues caused shock waves throughout the baseball world.  In 1901 at a meeting at the Leland Hotel in Chicago, the other baseball leagues negotiated a plan to maintain their independence. Thus temporary peace was established. Then the President of Eastern League, Patrick T. Powers announced the formation of the second National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues, in September 1901.

After 1902, a new National Agreement was signed by three leagues- the NL, the AL, the NAPBL. The new agreement made the baseball players become a commodity. A formal classification system for independent minor leagues was also set up to regulate the dollar value of contracts. This system is still running. It also gave the NA great power.

During First World War and Second World War many changes came. After Second World War a great revolution was happened in baseball. For half a century, from 1903 to 1953, the two major leagues consisted of two eight team leagues. It was in northeastern and Midwestern United States. But after 1953 baseball leagues expanded in west, south and north United States. In spite of many changes Major league Baseball are so popular.
