  • MLB is the most popular baseball league of all time. The media has made it a game for all people. At first only the people close to the stadium could enjoy the game.     Major League Baseball was one of the first sports to be broadcasted over United States by radio. It has a long history of over 80 years. This was the first step to make MLB popular nationally. In 1950’s Television companies became interested in National broadcasting of the MLB games but this media was not at his peak at this moment and the companies were doubtful about its success. The first step was taken from ABC television. Later CBS became interested and took the Saturday games in 1955. In 1960’s television became one of the main factors and main broadcasters wanted to use the popularity of baseball to increase their creditability to the viewers. CBS, NBC and ABC made deal with the teams and paid good amount of money for broadcasting their games nationally. ABC paid $5.7 million for the rights to the 28 holiday Games of the Week. The popularity of national broadcast increased a great deal as it became the main medium for entertainment. People from every corner of United States were willing to watch the baseball game and so the payment for broadcasting increased every year. ABC and NBC paid $92.8 million each to the Major league baseball for the right of broadcasting the games. In 1983, this contract increased to $1.2 billion. In 1990, MLB signed a new contract with ESPN worth $400 million. Fox joined the league in 1996 and TBS in 2008. MLB maintains several blackout policies on how the games are broadcasted. The current policy states that, a local broadcaster has priority to televise games of the team in their market over national broadcasters. Another policy is that certain broadcaster will contain rights over selected match. Like, Fox has certain rights for afternoon MLB games on Saturdays, and ESPN has the same rights for night games on Sundays. ESPN also telecast a large number of games throughout Europe. Many companies have signed agreement for telecasting the matching for a certain region and now the baseball game is telecasted almost everywhere in the world. This has made baseball more popular than ever. Now, MLB has fans in every corner of the world.

  • Baseball stadium is unique and has different shape than any other stadium. The field is more like a triangle while in other games square shaped stadium is most common. Baseball stadium has become a part of a pride of a team. Much of the importance is given to the stadium to make it wonderful and unique. It is a symbol of pride for the fans too and they are opted to watch their favorite team’s game in their home ground. So, every team is trying to increase the capacity of the stadium. Modern facilities are included in the stadium to attract more fans. The Baseball stadiums are more popularly known as ballpark.

    Every team of the MLB plays half of their total game in their home ground. This means they have to play at least 81 games in their own stadium under current league structure. If they qualify for the post-season, the total number of home matches increase. So, it is fundamental for each team to own a stadium. It is also one of the major income sources for the team. By selling ticket, the teams earn a huge amount of money. As the popularity of baseball has increased, more people are going to the stadium to watch their favorite teams play live. Many teams have already increased the seat capacity and many others have started construction of their new ballpark. Safeco is the home ground of Seattle Mariners since Field Baltimore Orioles own the Oriole Park at Camden Yards which have a seating capacity of 45,971. Progressive Field is the home ground of Cleveland Indians, Angel Stadium of Anaheim is home ground of Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Busch Stadium is home ground of St. Louis Cardinals, Citizens Bank Park is home ground of Philadelphia Phillies and PETCO Park is home ground of San Diego Padres. All these stadiums have seat capacity more than 40,000. The other stadiums have seating capacity around 40,000. The teams are trying to increase the seating capacity and the facility of their home ground.

    Each home ground has become a symbol of love for the team and their supporters. Many teams are building new ballpark for their fans and the trend of organizing the All-Star game in the opening of a new stadium has encouraged the teams to build modern stadiums.

They hold the most of the records. But the record itself is not enough to describe their performance. Ty Cobb holds the record of highest batting average in a career which is .367. Hugh Duffy holds this record in a single game with an average of .440. Barry Bonds has scored 762 home runs in his career which is a record in MLB. He also holds the record of highest home runs in a single season with 73 home runs. Pete rose scored the record of most hits in his career with 4,256 hits. In a single season, Ichiro Suzuki has made the record with 262 hits. Cy Young holds the record of playing most games in a career. He played 815 games from 1890-1911 for five different teams. He also holds the record of most finished games with 749 completed games. He is the owner of a number of other records. He won 511 games in his career which is the record of most winning. He also holds the record of most loosing with 316 losses in his career. He holds the record of most innings pitched with 7,355 times. Rickey Henderson scored 2,295 runs in his career which is the record of most career runs. This record belongs to Billy Hamilton for a single season run of 192. Shawn Green holds the record of covering most bases in a single game with 19 bases. Four of these were home runs, a double and a single. Some of these records are considered as long lasting. Bill Mueller scored 1 grand slam from each side of the plate in the same game which will last for a long time. Johnny Burnett holds the record of most hitting in a game with 9 hitting. Guy Hecker scored seven runs in a single game which is a world record. These records are everlasting and it seems that will stay for a long time until a superman of baseball come in action.
    If team record is considered then no team can even go close to New York Yankees. They have won the World Series 27 times and no team is even close to them. The team with second position is St. Louis Cardinals with 10 championships. The Yankees have also won the American League 40 times which will remain safe for decades. For National League this title goes to St. Louis Cardinals with 17 National League championships. Oakland Athletics come in third place with 9 World Series winning. They are also in third position for winning 14 American League.
    There are a few players of other leagues who have done pretty well in baseball. Sadaharu Oh is one of them. He holds the record of most home runs in baseball with 868 home runs. He also holds this record for a single season with 55 home runs.
    These records are worth to be mentioned and will not be forgotten soon at least the baseball lovers will always remember the outstanding performance of these greatest stars of all time.
